If you are a huge DC fan like I am, there’s no better time to be one. Not only is DC in the middle of one of the publishers biggest events ever with Dark Nights Death Metal, but they also just threw fans for a wild ride starting their new Justice League Endless Winter cross over event. Of course, I don’t think they had much of a choice other than to kick it off now since it is a winter themed event, but I’m all for having events coincide  to really get lost in. Especially with the year we have had, it’s nice to get lost in a world away from our own and these events are an exciting opportunity to do just that.

Writing –

Justice League Endless Winter #1 brings in not one but two writers to really deliver the ultimate event. This issue includes the talents of Andy Lanning and Ron Marz and the two together have created a decent story in this first issue, but nothing that really excites or makes me fully invested in this event. While being a Justice League title, this first issue mainly revolves around The Flash, Barry Allen and his struggle to find a balance between his real life work and his duties as a member of the League. This is probably one of the more grounded and relatable aspects of the story as many of us can relate to Barry’s predicament of finding a healthy work / life balance and it’s an interesting spin on the character that kind of warms readers up to him. The story goes around introducing the various members of the League by having Barry try to talk to all of them about finding his balance and I found myself really enjoying that approach as each introduction dealt with the various league members trying to subdue various  criminals. The way each character responds to Barry was a bit cliché and as you would imagine.  Superman approaches him with compassion while Batman pretty much ignores him and this continues around just as you can imagine with each character. Overall, I thought this issue was a fun read but as an event, it just kind of feels like DC is trying to give us some filler material to hold us over until January when they begin their Future State run. With this issue having happened before the Justice Doom War like the previous arcs since Scott Snyder’s departure, I really don’t see this event having much of an impact, if any, towards the bigger picture of continuity and feel this is more of a self contained event that’s not really worthy of being called an event. The story does set up what could be an entertaining series of events moving forward and since this is the first issue of the event, I wouldn’t write it off completely but I also wouldn’t hype this up to the excitement of recent events like Death Metal or even Joker War which ultimately fell flat.

Art –

The art of the issue is probably what I enjoyed most of this issue with long time Flash artists Howard Porter lending his talent to this first issue. Porter delivers some incredible character designs that echo his previous works but also have a fresh new feel to them at the same time. Every panel he delivers is full of incredible detail and really is a treat for readers visually to get swept up into the visual world presented in the issue. The colors of the issue also are a visual stocking stuffer with Hi-Fi adding beautiful tones and color elements to Porters art that are cohesive and really blend together beautifully. Obviously, a title like Endless Winter relays that the story takes place primarily during the winter and the tones of the winter scenes really portray the feeling of winter with the highlights of blue and white used to create the feeling of winter but in a more realistic way then seen in other comics based around the same season. Overall, it’s a stunning visual that the gives the reader an immersive feeling of the story and it’s settings.
