Man, what an amazing ride it has been reading the last three issues of Batman since James Tynion IV has taken over as it’s writer. It has been such a dramatic change that it almost feels like it’s a completely different series and that is a good thing. Since Rebirth, Batman has been a bit of a roller coaster ride with plenty of ups and downs but ever since Tynion took the helm, it’s been nothing but up which is what this series has needed. I absolutely love all the new things going on in the series, especially all of the amazing new gadgets that have been added to Batman’s arsenal which really fits in well with his new relationship with Lucius being on Comms in places of the late Alfred. Things are all really starting to come together in Tynion’s story, and it looks like Batman and family might be in for one of the toughest battles they have ever had.

Batman #89 starts off with the aftermath of the last issue where we saw an injured Penguin revealing to Batman what was going on and how serious the issue really was while Penguin was bleeding out. This issue starts off with Batman in action right off of rip and goes back and shows is the aftermath of Harley and Catwoman as well after the last issue where we saw Harley Quinn step in just in time to save Catwoman from her demise. We learn why Harley has come back to Gotham and a lot more unfolds as the issue goes on about the plan that’s about to be set in motion and the people behind it. This issue isn’t as thrilling as the last one, but it does fill in a few gaps and answers some questions we had from the last issue. We are of course introduced to another new Bat gadget which have just been getting cooler and cooler as they are introduced and we are once again left on an amazing cliff hanger that gets us deep into the emotion of the story and makes us want to know what’s next right now. Just another amazing entry from Tynion that really makes me so excited to have him as the new writer for this series.

With an amazing and darker Batman story, you need some amazing and dark art, right? Well that is exactly what we have been given with the previous issues and for this issue we see the addition of Carlo Pagulayan and one of my personal favorite artists, Danny Miki on board with Guillem March who has just been giving us some amazingly twisted art and beautiful dark designs. This issue is in my opinion the best one so far art wise with just an incredible team behind it and it really pays off as it brings Tynion’s story to life as well as makes us feel the emotion of the story by drawing us in with the amazing art. I went back and looked through the issue several times and was just blown away by how amazing this issue came out art wise. There are some really bad ass panels done in this one that use the art as the panel and some amazing breaks between them. Absolutely flawless work overall and I could not find one panel that was lacking any detail or color. This is one of the best teams I’ve reviewed in a Batman book in a while and they deserve a huge shout out for their amazing work overall in this issue. The letters are done by the great Clayton Cowles and as usual with Cowles’ work, the letters are clear and clean and very easily read. Fantastic job by the entire visual team!

I get so excited when this story comes across my previews and I cannot wait to read and review the next one because I know it is just going to be excellent.
