Hellboy volume 6: Strange Places

by stephengervais on April 08, 2012

Volume 6 is another fantastic offering from the Hellboy franchise featuring another great story and artwork by Mike Mignola. This is in fact the last volume thus far that Mignola has handled both duties. This volume contains two mini-series, The Third Wish and The Island.

Having quit the BPRD Hellboy travels to Africa where he eventually ends up at the bottom of the sea at the mercy of the sea monster, Bog Roosh and three mermaids. The first half of this volume deals with Hellboy’s capture and eventual escape. The second half deals with the dark castle he escaped to. Both are equally good adventures with plenty of signature Mignola humor, research, and entertainment.

Mignola never ceases to amaze me with his writing. The way he incorporates mythology, fairy tales, and history with humor and everyday life struggles make his work timeless. Throw in his signature dark, gothic illustrations and you get a piece of work that you won’t be able to put down. One warning though, it has been proven that once you enter the Hellboy universe you will have to sleep with a night light!!
