Now that Mech Cadet Yu is an ongoing, you can tell that Pak and Miyazawa are now taking their time to flesh out the world that they are building and doing so with smaller scale stories. This no more apparent in this issue, the second in a two part arc that sees the cadets besieged by a host of baby scrags that have infiltrated their base.

This leads the cadets to be in a different type of story, another benefit of an ongoing, as Pak turns to more conventional horror tropes than sci-fi mecha. And you know what? It works. By placing the cadets in more imminent danger, with no ready access to their mechs, we get to see these children showcase their mettle as individuals and get to watch them grow.

Though we get an issue almost completely dedicated to the cadets running for their lives and acting all heroic while doing so, we also get glimpses of what else drive these mechs from outer space as Pak makes sure to add some character growth to them as well even though they are not the main focus.

This all leads to an incredible change to the status-quo as the issue ends and Pak and Miyazawa have definitely piqued my interest to see what comes next.
