Infinity #3

Writer Jonathan Hickman Artists Dustin Weaver and Jerome Opena

Introduction

So far Jonathan Hickman’s epic Infinity has been an incredible thrill ride that absolutely nobody saw coming, except for those already immersed in both of the Avengers titles. In fact this new approach to the standard event comic has left many critics wildly perplexed with no idea on what to think about the series. Trying to follow the plot without the expanded tie-ins is something that I could not even comprehend. On the other hand those willing to follow Hickman down the rabbit hole have gotten some interesting facets of plot. The last issue of Avengers left our heroes in an interesting predicament, which in turn seems to lead towards the first formal attack of the Builders themselves. The council of superhumans which has started in Guardians Of The Galaxy, also seems as if it will take on a major role going forward. The group has focused heavily on the idea of the Earth as a sort of anomaly, as no villain has been able to conquer the planet so far.

Writing

While this story has been engaging throughout the span of the three main issues, the pieces are beginning to inch forward at a snails pace. Thankfully the last sequence in the book featuring the Inhumans and Attilan has one of the best moments in the entire saga thus far. Black Bolt is always an interesting character, but watching him finally play a major role in this story is satisfying to say the least. A piece of the puzzle that has not seemed to fit halfway through the story are the Illuminati. This is a thread that absolutely needs to be payed off in the next official issue of the story, or it could be a huge missing piece that Hickman does not bring together. It is wonderful to see the New Universe characters being payed off in such a cinematic manner. It is passed time for the heroes to get the spotlight, as they thankfully proved to be important in the last issue of Avengers. This installment also places a bow on the battle of the corridor. Big things feel as if they are heading towards this event which means it accomplished the grand achievement.

Art

The art of Jerome Opena and Dustin Weaver should blow readers out of the water. Justin Ponsor also does such a beautiful job with colors on the issue. Everything comes together like a grand orchestra hitting a wonderful crescendo. Weaver delivers the earthbound scenes that travel the globe of the Marvel Universe. Strange aliens and imaginative heroes have never looked this good. The space escapades with Opena showcases exciting visual aspects of the entire scope within the story. Watching the scene of Starbrand victorious is a battle cry ringing in the hearts of his enemies. The former artist attempts to outdo that scene in his part with Attilan. This entire comic has a great sense of storytelling and grandiose pencils.

Conclusion

Infinity is starting to shift towards a second phase on the storytelling. This issue is built out of two incredible moments that are worth the price of admission alone. A couple may be slightly underwhelmed by this chapter, but it seems more than likely that the creative team will deliver in the latter half of this event comic book.
