I walked into this issue with essentially zero expectations, so when I saw many of the early reactions a few days ago, I was stunned. I was stunned that anybody actually got much out of this issue. A bit hyperbolic, but I'll explain.

I understand the intention and the craft, but a lot of this issue simply falls flat for me. The team's attempt at comedy mostly falls flat for me, and I'll just point out a specific page. Remember the veggie tray from a few issues ago? It's back, and Darkseid's eating from it. And it's a nine-panel grid of him chewing a carrot. Hashtag relatable, I'm guessing? I genuinely don't see the value or humour in a page like that.

As for the story, I feel like the events of this could have taken place eight issues ago and it wouldn't have made a different. There's no build-up, no tension, and this story literally falls flat on its face as it heads towards the finish line. Again, I genuinely don't understand the praise this is getting.

The art is mostly fantastic save for some obvious repeated panels which I'm never a fan of. I'm not one to tell an artist how to do their job, but nine-panel grids have so much potential as opposed to changing the side of the mouth that Darkseid is chewing with. There's a lack of dynamic storytelling that King's story simply can't provide.

The ending is confusing and I severely doubt King will explain it next issue. This was boring and the next issue couldn't come any slower.
