Sundowners #2

Crazy? Definitely. In danger anyways? Oh yes.

Writing: Tim Seeley
Art: Jim Terry
Publisher: Dark Horse

Some burning questions are answered in issue 2 of Sundowners but plenty more are raised, too.

Tim Seeley's tale of hereos who might just be crazy people takes a dramatic and, humorous, turn in this issue 2. Our support group and superhero team at large is on the hunt for their kidnapped friend and fellow group member who we soon learn is in very real and very scary danger. Seeley's writing here does a good job of playing the fine line between crazy and real and the dark humor is more on point than it misses. These broken people are becoming more and more real, less hero and more human in a way that makes you care about what they have to say and also care about how they got to this point at all. Does it all make sense? No not really, but, with the amount of questions that were answered from issue 1 in this issue, it's reasonable to believe that more intrigue and delicate story telling is on the way.

Terry's art is still a combination of great retro heroism and dark, gothic, horror. The final few pages involving the assault of a main character are very well done and very creepy. The first issue was median at best but this issue is without a doubt a step in the right direction. The character and monster design is unique and grounded. The action is realistic which is good as it hinges on the actions of real people and not superheroism.

There is a great deal of mystery surrounding this book. Is it all real? It seems that it may be. But, knowing that it's real doesn't stop the questions, if anything, it raises more. For now, Sundowners is doing real, dark and damaged heroism in the right way.
