After so much action in these past issues, Tom Taylor takes the time to slow the pace by having a flashback issue. This is an interesting idea and is well executed, however I’m not sure if I would say for the most part if it was really needed as only the end seems essential to the story.

Tom Taylor is one of the few people who have been allowed to kill Alfred so in this issue he takes the opportunity to really emphasize the role that Alfred had in the life of Batman. However I personally think he goes too far in making him too helpless. I mean Batman is meant to be the world’s greatest detective so it is hard to believe he wouldn’t know where his wallet is, or how many times he has eaten that day or even which refrigerator the milk is in. I do understand what Tom Taylor was doing but would say maybe it should have been better done.

The next part of the issue goes in the past and follows Damian’s first night out alone. This was actually really cool as Batman tells him to get back to the batcave and that it is usually done in 3 hours, but as Damian travels he realizes that there are a lot of people that need help. He helps them and we he gets back to the cave we have a great moment in which Alfred and Batman show and say that they are proud of Damian. This serves to remind that Batman did actually lose both his sons in this story.

I would have to say this is one of the weakest issues yet. Not because it is a necessarily bad story, but because it does little to contribute to the story except for the last bit. The last bit has a moment where Batman seems to want to inject Connor, Green Arrow and Black Canary’s son, which seems weird. However that isn’t out of character with this universe as people often do things that you wouldn’t necessarily expect them to do. Still this could be something new and different.
