Ms. Marvel #8

by F.D. White on September 11, 2014

Written by: G. Willow Wilson
Art by: Adrian Alphona

I'll try to start this review as calmly as possible. Okay, here we go.

I NEED A LOCKJAW PLUSH RIGHT NOW, MARVEL. MAKE IT HAPPEN.

Alright, so that wasn't very calm, but in that vein I'll start this review the opposite of what I normally do and focus on the art. I can't imagine really anyone else doing the art for Ms. Marvel besides Adrian Alphona. His style so perfectly captures G. Willow Wilson's smart and plucky writing. Jake Wyatt was a solid replacement for the two Wolverine issues, but Alphona is almost vital to this book. I literally squealed when I saw Lockjaw for the first time. He's just too cute.

Coupled along with the gorgeous art is Wilson's impeccable storytelling skills. Kamala's threats don't need to be world-ending to be compelling. Seeing a school partially destroyed by a giant robot is reason enough to become emotionally invested. On top of action we're still getting great character moments with Kamala and her supporting cast. Everyone feels fully realized even if they're only in the book for a page at a time.

Ms. Marvel continues to one of the most fun and compelling books on the stands.

This issue was too lovely to look at, I totally agree. We all need a Lockjaw in our life.
