Saga #1

Two alien lovers & a new born baby are on the run from the powers that be in this story about war-torn planets, fantastic creatures & kinky robot sex.

Romeo & Juliet in a sci-fi/fantasy setting from Brian K. Vaughan, the creator of Y : The Last Man & Ex Machina. Vaughan creates this very strange and unique world about a man & a woman called Marko & Alana, a couple caught in the middle of an intergalactic/interspecies war, where magic is fought against technology. The story is narrated by the couple’s child Hazel. Both characters are fugitives on the lam and eventually a price is put on their heads. Lots of colourful characters & witty & funny dialogue, especially between Marko & Alana. These two are lovable, charismatic and are very much in love. You root for them, you want them to escape, survive and find a better life for their baby.

The illustrations, coloring & Hazel’s lettering are all done by Fiona Staples (North 40) and she does a phenomenal job. I love the pages where Hazel explains where her parents are from, using a star map and lettering it the way a child would on a black board. Image Comics knocks another one out of the park with this title and I’ve got a good feeling about this one. This feels more like a Vertigo title, than an Image title and although there are no warnings on the cover, this is definitely not a book for younger readers. There is nudity, coarse language and sexual situations, which doesn’t bother me, but might be offensive to some readers. I must sound like a total square right now, but I think people should be warned. Here’s another warning. Skip this title and you’ll be missing on something very special. Just saying.
