The Dawn of DC initiative recently kicked off and with it comes its first event, DC KNIGHT TERRORS and this week kicks off the month-long event starting with Knight Terrors First Blood #1 by the main event creative team of writer Joshua Williamson and artist Howard Porter. I personally was thrown off a bit by a horror event launching from DC during the summer months which is usually used to kick off major crisis style events, but First Blood #1 brings the same energy and excitement that any other event launch title has and is in my opinion one of the best event launch titles we have gotten from DC in years, proving it doesn’t have to be Halloween time for horror to shine in the DC Universe.

Williamson wastes no time and this story dives right into the action as it opens up with John Dee, also know as Dr. Destiny is dragged into a nightmare and killed in the style of Nightmare on Elm Street, which send an alert through the Hall of Justice banding Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman together to look into the matter. From there, the story plunges deeper and deeper as more nightmares are unleashed and the heroes have to face horrors they’ve never seen before so our heroes have to turn to Deadman for help, who may end up playing a fairly large role in this event moving forward based on the hints Williamson drops for readers throughout the issue.

While the story gives off the feeling of a nightmare, the art team of Howard Porter and Brad Anderson really bring the sensation to life with Porter’s twisted and grueling art topped with unnerving colors from Anderson that blend to make you feel like you’re really trapped in a bad dream except this is one you do not want to wake up from because it’s a thrill ride from start to finish.

The overall quality of this event is really going to depend on how the tie in issues play out, but if the main titles can keep up the momentum of this first issue then Knight Terrors may cement itself as one of the best event titles from DC of all time thanks to the dynamics of this creative team.

Knight Terrors First Blood #1 is available now at your local comic shop and is free to read on the DC Universe Infinite app.
