Here we go the last issue in what has been a great opening story arc for Shade the Changing Girl. In this issue Megan is back in spirit form and has had enough. She wants her body back and sets out to battle Shade to regain possession of it. Along with this clash for control of Megan’s body we also take a trip to Meta which sets up future plot points.

The fight between Megan and Shade takes place throughout most of the issue in a sort of astral plain and the real world. It makes for a really original and unique take on your typical fight sequence. In the astral plane you can see the two of them duking it out but in the real world depending on who’s around you don’t necessarily see Megan’s spirit. Essentially all you see is Shade reacting to the fight which looks like she’s either on serious drugs or having a complete meltdown. There are certain characters that seem to be able to see Megan’s spirit so when they are present we see both sides of the battle. This may sound confusing but the writer and artist do a great job portraying it in a way that is easy to follow.

This issue also gives us a first-hand look on how cruel Megan is. We’ve heard about her misgivings throughout the story arc but we’ve never actually experienced it until this issue.

I feel we get more character development of the supporting cast this issue than we have with past issues. I get the feeling River and Teacup are about to step up and play more prominent roles in future issues. The visit to Meta also expands its purpose within the story. The next arc should work the Meta subplot into the main story line.

The artwork is one huge psychedelic trip. The battle scenes between planes are amazing. I absolutely love everything about it. Zarcone’s images are bonkers and Parks bright palette of colors completes the madness. It’s one of those books that I flip through frequently after reading it just to enjoy the visual journey.

That was a highly entertaining conclusion to the first arc. I think with the development of the supporting cast and the role Meta seems to be building towards this will be a pleasure to read for the foreseeable future.
