Morning Glories volume 1: For A Better Future (tbp)

by stephengervais on March 06, 2012

Morning Glories volume one in a nutshell is the story of six gifted kids being excepted into the nation’s most prestigious boarding school, Morning Glory Academy. Right about now you’re probably thinking wow that really doesn’t sound like an interesting read at all. What turns this into an exciting read is upon arriving at the school we soon find out the students are cut off from the outside world in an unusual and cruel manner. The sadistic faculty that run the school seem to freely use torture, brain washing, and murder to keep the students on the premises for what is yet an unknown reason.

Writer Nick Spencer delivers a real gem here. He builds up so much mystery and suspense you can’t turn the pages fast enough to see what will happen next. The story keeps you guessing throughout and before you know it, it’s over and you still don’t know what’s going on but you can’t wait to find out. Spencer gives us a nice introduction to the main characters and their various personalities. He’s really laid the groundwork for a great cast to play with.

The art by Joe Eisma really helps the story move along with his fine detail work on the characters and nice clean panels. With everyone wearing school uniforms Eisma does a great job giving the characters distinctive looks.

The first volume is brought to us by Image Comics and contains issue one to six. It would’ve been nice to have a cover gallery included but that’s really a minor complaint. It’s a very addictive story that has me asking “what next”? I can’t wait to read volume two.
