Supergirl Season 2 Episode 9 Review
Supergirl returned after a month on break with a good episode. New character arcs were intiated with Kara finally getting some love this season. While this episode did succeed in certain areas, critical issues affected the overall enjoyment.
This episode finally put Kara back in the focus. For what has been the last three or four episodes, Kara has been sidelined for characters like Jimmy or romances llike Alex/Maggie. Kara has received notable less development in comparison to last season. And that makes sense. Coming into this season, the side characters besides Cat Grant all lacked true development. This season is rectifying that issue at the cost of Kara's focus. This episode changed that by having a Kara-centric episode that brought back her reporter storyline as well. Snapper Carr has a really nice dynamic with Kara and it was nice to see Snapper slowly mentoring Kara through non-obvious means. Kara also got development in her romantic life as Mon-El and Kara grew close together. Their dynamic was a highlight of the episode as the chemistry in between them is palpable. From Mon-El's wit, to Kara's teachings, I cannot wait for what is in store for them.
Speaking of performances, Kevin Smith was able to glean some great performances from Melissa Benoist, Chris Wood, and Jeremy Jordan. All gave compelling performances and Kevin Smith's direction was able highlight small moments which made the episode stand out a bit more.
The fight scenes and cgi were all up to the usual standard with the opening car chase scene standing out the most. I was personally surprised by the landscape they used for the planet they visited. It did not seem like a place near Vancouver so it was cool to see a unique set.

The main relationship portion of this episode was dedicated towards Sanvers who, while a fan-favorite couple, fell short to the classic CW plotlines/plotholes. Alex jumping ship after a small crisis was something that was out of character and a bit jarring. It was a sloppy writing technique to get Alex to open up to Maggie and it could have been handled better. Also the writing in general wasn't the best the show has seen. It was a sub-par script that lacked any stakes and any enjoyment came mainly out of the performances. Winn is a perfect example of how uneven circumstances started a plot that didn't feel earned. The villains also lacked any menace making the episode feel more like filler than anything meaningful.
