The Walking Dead #137

This was a really stellar issue. I wonder if Kirkman is trying to use the same techniques that Linklater used in Boyhood, I can see some similarities between it and the story developing with Carl. In this issue we get a LOT of insight into Carl's growth. There's some stuff with Maggie, and it's VERY important, but this is purely a Carl issue. Again, no zombies. No surprise there though, this comic has become more about the inner turmoil of the humans rather than their struggle to take down the zombie hordes. This issue is more of the same.

Kirkman, what can I say? His dialogue is always killer and the plot seems to be moving steadily along the tracks. I think that his newer "love" story/triangle was introduced at the right time. The stuff going on with Maggie and the inhabitants of her community feels a tad bit shoehorned in, but I think it's par for the course. Conflict is the father of plot and you can't have a good story without massive amounts of conflict. Kirkman delivers all that and more in this issue, plus the last panel isn't really a cliffhanger as much as a "resolution". The panels before offered more cliffhangers. It was interesting.

The art team is still doling out the black and white fanfare. I'm constantly impressed by their ability to capture everything that Kirkman writes with such amazing precision. I can't get over the facial expressions that they're able to capture, they blow me away every issue and I'm sure I'm not the first reviewer to comment on them. You can tell right off the bat how to read the line in your head just by looking at the facial expression of the character and I absolutley love that dynamic in the art. Besides that, the obvious absence of color tricks the mind into creating our own via the shading. Just stellar work.

Amazing issue! Get it while it's still before Valentine's Day! <3
