The Fade Out #3

How much more perfect can a comic book get? I'll never truly know after this wonderful series. This whole world and story is as masterful as the biggest Hollywood blockbuster, but it's not for kids. The comic starts off with breasts and sex flying all over the page. A flashback to simpler times. Times when the death of a starlet weren't on the minds of several Hollywood execs. From there, the story takes a very dark turn, but ends strong with a question moreso than an answer. It also looks like the next issue is going to deal with World War II, which should be amazing since Brubaker is writing it.

Speaking of Brubaker...he writes these comics so effortlessly it seems. The dialogue is right on the money as usual and the narration in the background flings you headlong into 1940s Hollywood. The scope seems so dense that I often had little thoughts here and there about Brubaker's research for it all. He must have had a mountain of different books and shots of the Hollywood of old. I can feel myself getting more interested in the subject matter as I read it. That says something about the story.

BUT THE ART! Oh goodness, Phillips is still drawing gold with his pencils and inks. I'm still a huge fan of the "blotchy" coloring that is done. It adds some unseen drama to the pictures because of the feigned chaos. On top of that, the setpieces are drawn to perfection as well, which is a bit of a given since most of this comic takes place in a Hollywood studio. Everybody expresses their emotions just right and he translates Brubaker's writing perfectly in each panel. Absolute perfection.

BUY IT BUY IT BUY IT!!! The best there is.
