Let me start off by saying that when Gwen Stacy was first brought back with spider powers as part of Spider-Verse, I was indifferent. Whereas the internet exploded, as evidenced by the current bid prices of Gwen's first appearance in Edge of Spider-Verse #2 and the absurdly cool 7" vinyl of The Mary Janes' single "Face It, Tiger", I thought the standalone Spider-Gwen series was an okay idea at best, a cash grab at worst. Certain it'd ride the coattails of other young heroines like Batgirl and Ms. Marvel before fading into obscurity, I reluctantly added it to my pull list.

Boy, was I wrong.

While there're obvious similarities to the current Batgirl and Ms. Marvel series, hardboiled detective’s daughter wants independence, misunderstood teenage girl granted amazing powers by strange circumstance, etc., Spider-Gwen stands on her own as an excellent addition to Marvel's ever expanding roster. Despite the series short run, it’s been an absolute rollercoaster ride thus far, blending it with modern grit and style with the classic Spider-Man origin of an inexperienced hero learning to use their newfound powers and coping loss of a loved one.

Latour hit his groove in the very first issue and continues to deliver plot and dialogue without any hiccups. Rodriguez’s excellent line work and Renzi’s vibrant pinks, purples, and greens are reminiscent of Snyder & Capullo's Batman in the best possible way. The art and writing work together to pull you in and effortlessly lead you from panel to panel. From start to finish, it’s fresh, engaging, and an overall blast to read.
