Baltimore Vol. 1 : The Plague Ships (HC)

by lucstclair on June 24, 2012

Follow the adventures of Lord Henry Baltimore, ex-military man, now a ruthless vampire slayer seeking revenge for the deaths of his beloved wife & family. Baltimore searches for a specific vampire called Haigus, who changed his life forever, while exterminating random vampires on the way. His perilous mission will lead him to plague-infested ships, fungus zombies & giant sea creatures.

The Pros

From the imagination of Mike Mignola, with the assistance of Christopher Golden, have created a new chapter in the horrifying world of war, monsters & the supernatural. I love this book. Baltimore is a balls out, vampire-killing machine, a fearless & damned man who has nothing to lose. There’s a phrase uttered by Lord Baltimore himself that perfectly sums up the character. “The plague’s had its chance with me. As for death, it’s already came. I just don’t have the good sense to lie down.” What I like about Mignola’s creations, like Hellboy and the characters from the B.P,R.D., is that they’re not perfect. They’re special, but flawed individuals who have suffered in life, but use their hate & torment to save humanity from the monsters who creep in the night.

Ben Stenbeck & Dave Stewart’s illustrations effectively capture the devastated look and feel of the plague-infested Europe of the early 20th century. Generous amounts of earth tones and bright red for the vampire’s eyes & the blood they spill. Looks great.

The Cons

Nothing negative here.

The Outcome

This was a delightful read from beginning to end from Mike Mignola, who rarely disappoints. A must for all fans. I look forward to reading more Baltimore adventures. Originally published as Baltimore : The Plague Ships #1-#5. From Dark Horse Comics.
