Colonized #1

by lucstclair on April 10, 2013

In the eco friendly town of Carbon Falls, a UFO attempts first contact with the inhabitants, but what happens when the aliens accidentally beam up a flesh eating zombie, thinking it’s an indigenous life form? Sci-fi collides with comedy & horror in IDW’s wacky new series.

The Team

Written Chris Ryall (Infestation : Outbreak, The Hollows) & illustrated by Drew Moss (Sidekickin Hero).

The Pros & Cons

This is without a doubt a guilty pleasure and I completely gorged myself. Underworld’s got Vampires Vs Werewolves, the upcoming Extinction Parade has Vampires Vs. Zombies, so now Aliens Vs Zombies? Why the hell not? I think it’s hilarious that a bunch of friendly extraterrestrials make first contact with a zombie and this series has a few different ideas running around. First off, the aliens aren’t hostile, this ain’t Mars Attacks, which I can’t tell you how refreshing that is. Secondly, not all the citizens are red necks, which these days they’re all over the place, especially on TV (Duck Dynasty, Honey Boo Boo). There’s a subplot involving the more evolved characters that has some merit, so it’s not just Aliens Vs Zombies. Thirdly, the zombies do what zombies do, so there’s no breaking new ground for them, actually so far there’s just 1 of them, but that rapidly changes.

I don’t really know much about writer Chris Ryall, I know he wrote several Infestation comics, so he seems on familiar ground here. Drew Moss’ illustrations look decent enough with big headed aliens with large bulgy eyes that kept me thinking about that Playstation game Destroy All Humans. I also appreciated his large panels with big Jack Kirby like lettering for action sounds.

The Outcome

Now this isn’t a game changer in comic books that much is clear, but it’s a lot of fun and if you just go with it I think it’s worth your time and dough.
