It does little justice to say that Spread has been a fun book to read. In 6 issues Jordan has not only built up a world whose survival hinges on a single child (and her retainers, to be fair), but also introduced a cast of characters ranging from the likes of Mad Max to The Thing and beyond. It’s been a fun ride, but issue 6 also marks the end of our first arc, as well as the first all-out battle we’ve witnessed in the world of Spread.

As issue 5 left us off, there’s essentially a four way battle going on within what seems to be the last (somewhat sane) bastion of civilization. No and company, Ravello, the cannibals, and the Spread are all tearing into each other – and it ain’t goin’ too well for No. This is everything that Jordan and Strahm have been leading up to, and in all its visceral glory I can say this battle is easily the best issue of the arc, if not at least on par with issue #1. Guts are flying, spreadworms be wormin’, and in the middle of it is Molly and Hope, just trying to stay alive while No holds off Ravello; and that’s a pretty darn hard thing to do once everyone realizes just why she’s called “Hope”.

Obviously I’m gonna try not to spoil much, but with the arc’s conclusion Jordan makes it pretty clear that the future entails some big changes -- not just for No and team (as well as their dynamics), but also in the Spread itself; and that can only mean more violence and monster-alien-zombie-mutant slaying goodness for all the boys and girls. As far as I can tell Strahm is staying on along with Sobreiro, which is great news for those who love the beautiful contrast of the series’ brutal action against the bleak snowy landscapes, as well as the glorious attention to detail each character and monster gets by Strahm’s hand. Oh, and for those humbly awaiting Luther Strode’s magnificent return? There’s a little surprise at the issue’s end, just to let you know how Strode and Petra are faring since their run-in with Jack the Ripper. Luther Strode and Spread for $3.50? Not a bad way to spend your lunch money. Or, you know, pay check.

So, all in all? Damn fine way to end an arc, and set the tone for the next chapter. Yeah, we’re left on a cliffhanger, but at least it’s definite in letting us know that there is more Spread to come.
