I can’t say that Ellis takes a slight step away from the action in this issue, but he does in essence by taking a chance to develop two previously introduced characters, and explore their backgrounds a bit more in depth. Interestingly enough, this is more of a character driven issue, heeding little mind to the Trees, and focusing on the motives and circumstances of Chenglei and Eligia.

Exploring their respective homes in China and Italy, we find out that all is not peachy keen in Eligia’s relationship (along with some underlying tensions facing the Italian youth), and come to find Chenglei still confined to his room and illustrations; still as entranced with the Trees as hen we first encountered him.

There’s honestly not too much to note about this issue, just that while it’s great to see Ellis develop his characters, it’s a bit tragic to not learn more about the Trees themselves. His characters remain interesting as always however, and gaining a little insight as to the social climates in two drastically different parts of the world most likely has implications that I’m not readily considering. In any case, I desperately want to find out what the damned Trees are.
