Injection #3

by Kalem Lalonde on July 10, 2015

Writer: Warren Ellis
Artist: Declan Shalvey

Warren Ellis’ Injection was an unexpected book. Ellis is a master of engaging readers in his stories without giving them ample information. Injection is the perfect example of that and while issue #3 delves into a lot of exposition, this sense of mystery still remains. We are given many pieces of the puzzle (though still not enough to piece things together) in this issue as Ellis elaborates upon the element of folklore that has been incorporated so well into this story. He finds a perfect balance of mystical and scientific aspects of this book here, creating a diverse read that is able to smoothly meld multiple genres of storytelling. And as the book goes on, we begin to get a clearer sense of Ellis’ main characters and their fun and lively dynamic. However, nothing in this book can be quite as lively as Declan Shalvey’s mesmerizing art. When Ellis’ strange concepts emerge, Declan Shalvey completely steals this book with beautiful and even haunting pages. Shalvey is one of the best artists working in comics today and Ellis knows how to make him shine.
