Avengers #41

Writer: Jonathan Hickman
Artist: Mike Deodato

Short Review Sunday!

Hickman’s Avengers run titles are building towards the grandest Marvel event in recent memory. His story has been headed towards its climax in full force, but this issue slows things down a tad in order to set-up even more peril. Yes, that’s right. Somehow, Hickman’s brain managed to up the stakes of this book past the Cabal and the collapse of the multiverse.

We’re introduced to Ultimate Reed Richards, here and Hickman maintains a firm handle on the character’s voice throughout the issue. It’s hard to imagine anyone more frightening for the Avengers to go up against (considering the Cabal is already part of the story). He’s a great addition to the grand list of antagonists for this series and his presence is one that makes me fear for our Earth. Speaking of villains, Hickman takes the time to follow up on the end of the phenomenal Avengers #40 and I loved how he built on that cliffhanger. There will be huge repercussions for the heroes of Earth, especially Black Panther who made a huge, prideful mistake in his pivotal moment for the Avengers.

As for art duties, Mike Deodato returns to pencil this great looking issue. This book has absolutely no visual consistency but at least every artist does strong work.

Overall, Avengers #40 may have slowed things down, but I’m astonished at how much it raised the stakes for this story. Hickman isn’t done building and once he is, he will bring the highest quality of storytelling Marvel Now! has seen.
