Aquaman #30

by Jonathan Closner on April 24, 2014

Imagine if the stories you were told when you were kid are true and you are faced to face with a deranged myth. You realize that the hero you were told about as a kid is now a deranged lunatic; would you help him or watch him fall further into the abyss?
In Aquaman # 30, Aquaman fights an insane Hercules who was locked away in an Atlantean hell with other monsters called the giant born by the former king of Atlantis. When Hercules is freed he sets his sights on Aquaman for revenge because he felt betrayed by the form king of Atlantis for locking him away when he was fighting the giant born. Also an assassination attempt on Mera’s life brings a new face to save her from her near death.

What I loved

I loved everything about this issue Jeff Parker has taken the torch from Geoff Johns and has ran with it continuing to make Aquaman and his supporting cast especially Mera compelling. A task which seemed undoable is now one of the best books that DC is publishing even after 30 issues. What I thought was the most interesting thing about this issue was that he incorporated myth with Aquaman which is something that I haven’t ever seen done before and it fits so perfectly with his world. I hope his run on Aquaman is long because he is doing a great job of expanding his world in the DC universe especially the inclusion of Swamp Thing and Wonder Woman. Paul Pelletier and Alvaro Martinez do a wonderful job on art making Aquaman seem strong, Hercules appear monstrous, and Mera look beautiful, Even the colors are vivid  its all I could ask for in a book.

There is nothing that I didn’t like a about this issue in my eyes it’s a perfect issue with action, sorrow and an introduction to a new character. It’s left me wanting more I can’t wait to see how he incorporates Swamp Thing into the fray and also the evil scientist who seems to be brewing a disastrous plot against Aquaman.  Bravo Jeff parker, Paul Pelletier, and Alvaro Martinez.
