Justice League United #0

by Jonathan Closner on April 23, 2014

What would bring a cavalcade of strange characters like justice league united together? Maybe they were pulled out of a hat at random, maybe it’s because even though animal man has saved the world before star girl still feels he’s incompetent, or maybe sometimes you just need a little help from some friends.
Justice league united is a new team book by Dc comics that features Animal man, Starman, Stargirl, Green Arrow, Martian Manhunter, and a new Cree female super hero as they form a super hero group in Canada.

The Good

My favorite part of the issue was that the tone was fun, which is drastically different from what DC has been publishing lately most books are grim and dark but this book takes a lighter tone where characters are smiling and making joke instead of just brooding in their sorrow. I also really enjoyed the dynamic between Animal man and green arrow I think the interactions between them are going to be hilarious. As for the story itself I think the setup for why the characters come together was really interesting and has me hooked as to what is going to happen next and how this plot is going to evolve. Jeff Lemire writing is spot on and makes all the characters feel right and have their own voice. I felt that the art by Mike McKone was good, the people where well portioned and not overly exaggerated especially on the women, Also the colors were bright and vibrant which is what I expect from a books that takes place in space a lot.

The Bad

For a first issue it doesn’t do a lot of explain the characters which there are a whole lot of so if you are a new reader you might be lost as to who these people are and what can they do. Also the art felt kind of generic to me there nothing that stands out on the page that would make it any different from any other comic.

Overall

It’s a good first issue with decent art that leaves me wanting more, I’m a sucker for Alien conspiracy stories and I can’t wait to see what Lemire does with this strange cavalcade of characters.
