Suicide Squad #6

Suicide Squad has been not stop entertainment with each issue and each turn of the page, so it should come as no surprise that the sixth issue is nothing but thrills and excitement. Picking up immediately where the previous issue left off, with Flag’s smoking gun, and a room full of questions. What follows is an issue that starts off the rails and slowly builds into a barrel roll of destruction. Where this story is going is anyone’s guess, but we can be sure that the ride will be well worth it.

Following Rick Flag’s expression of his 2nd Amendment rights we are presented with two images. The first, and that which Flagg sees, is Amanda Waller sprawled out on the ground with a small case of “hole in the head”. The second, which is how events actually transpires, is Katana in all her Samurai awesomeness casually catching the bullet on her blade. In addition to being a demonstration of how Katana may be the most skilled of all the squad members, it also shows the audience that things are not quite as right as they should be. As the men in the lab below begin to tear each other apart and Zod’s near lifeless body remains restrained by red sun radiation, Waller decides it is time to get in on the action and promptly punches Flag to the ground in a powerfully, yet comical, declaration that she is “THE WALL”. If it wasn’t for the timely intervention of a power outage either Flag or Waller was certain to meet their ultimate end.

Elsewhere in Belle Reve, it is business as usual as Harley, Deadshot, and Eli Diablo sit down for a lovely meal of tax dollar paid dinner. Harley is still shaken by her experience with the Black Vault, and it seems to be affecting her personality. Instead of the jolly psychopath we are familiar with, the Harley in this issue is much more thoughtful and reserved. As more and more inhabitants begin to lose their composure and their sanity, Harley Quinn quickly rises in the ranks as the most sensible person in the prison turned black site. What does it mean when the only person to notice that amiss is a certified psychopath with a fondness for mallets and explosives? The answer is nothing good, especially with each power fluctuation weakening the red sun radiation and making it only moment before the enraged Kryptonian is once again free to seek his vengeance. Also, there may or may not be a certain Oceanic ghost roaming the halls.

Once again Rob Williams has found the perfect balance between action and story that keeps a reader entertained and eager to come back for more. The dynamic action scenes and the close up of characters faces really give Jim Lee’s art a chance to shine in this issue. Once again it is the backup story that brings the real heart in this issue as we explore the tragic childhood and origin of the Squad’s most monstrous member. As unpredictable as the Squad themselves, there is no telling where Rob Williams’ story will go, but what is certain is that is bound to be as entertaining as anything currently on the shelves.
