As the singed boots of their fallen comrade remain in the room as a reminder of just how dangerous this mission truly is, Task Force X has little time to mourn as they deal with a very pissed off, and slightly deranged, Kryptonian. Suicide Squad #3 pick up right where the previous issue left off, with the team trapped in an underwater, secret, Russian prison beset on all sides by people and who want to kill them, in short, just a typical mission for the most expendable team in all of comics. Combining humor and action, while not sacrificing story advancement and development, this is the best issue of the new series and solidifies it as one of the most entertaining books DC is currently publishing.

The issue begins with the team stuck in a room with General Zod, with the Kryptonian having just vaporized everyone’s favorite Australian projectile weapon specialist. There isn’t time for anything other than an acknowledgment of ther loss before the team has to get into action and find a way to stop this menace, who is physically a match for the most powerful man on the planet. We get a chance to really see how Flag, despite not liking his teammates, is committed to keeping them alive if he can, and how other members of the Squad won’t hesitate to throw their teammates to the wolves if it saves their own skin. The plus side of this taking place in an underwater prison is that there is nowhere to flee to. The Suicide Squad must work together to defeat this alien threat, but even their combined strength and Enchantress’ magic may not be enough to stop the alien tyrant and whatever other threat still loom in this secret prison. Whatever happens, you can rest assured that it will be exciting, unorthodox, and just a little crazy because after all, this isn’t a Justice League mission.

Rob Williams knocks it out of the park again with Suicide Squad #3, as the series continues to be one of, if not the, most enjoyable of DC’s current offerings. The story is action packed and suspenseful, with dialogue that is downright funny at times. In addition to the main story he also penned the backup to this issue, which just like those in the prior issues, carries the most emotional weight as it explores Katana’s origin and her reason for joining the Squad. Jim Lee’s art remains the benchmark in quality and energy for any series and it is really allowed to explode in this action driven issue. Not a single frame feels stale or phoned in and even the silliest proves to be integral in crafting the story and tone of this series. With three phenomenal issues behind us, I think it safe to say that the post-rebirth Suicide Squad is a success and a book that you should be picking up today.
