Scrounging the depths of detective drama

Dept. H #1

Writer / Artist – Matt Kindt
Colors – Sharlene Kindt
Publisher – Dark Horse

Mia’s father is dead and she’s going to get (quite literally) to the bottom of it.

In a fantastic looking but relatively one-note first issue from writer/artist Matt Kindt accompanied by watercolors from Sharlene Kindt, we are introduced in quick succession to Mia, her grisly duty and a cast of not entirely fleshed out other characters who inhabit the top secret and claustrophobic underwater research facility, Dept. H.

The issue does what it sets out to do – especially so in introducing Mia, her relationship with her father, and her determination to find the man or woman responsible for his death but little more than that unless you’re willing to re-read and pick up some of the clues I think upon subsequent re-reads that Matt is laying out in plain view here which I think is a bit of a misstep, as really only the last page or two draws the reader all the way into the world.

The artwork is beautiful aside from some of the faces in particular being a little abrasive and Matt’s line work is beautifully accompanied by Sharlene’s watercolors which also accentuate the thematic work of the world the story exists in.

There’s the occasional fault, mainly in introducing so many characters in such a quick succession, but for the most part it’s a beautiful, enticing read of a first issue that fans of Mind MGMT can rest assured is in keeping with Kindt’s other beautiful, strange and poetic works.
