The Fiction is a new miniseries at Boom! from Curt Pires (Mayday, The Tomorrows) and artist David Rubin about a group of children who find new worlds to explore through a somewhat mysterious, benevolent magical book. It’s all good, well written, drawn and colored fun until things get murdery and surreal in the best ways, then? It’s something more than fun.

It’s a strange first issue, accessible and deep, colorful and dark. It’s also very good as some readers like myself have undoubtedly to expect from Pires who has found a perfect match for his story here with Rubin.

Pires uses the story to effectively and, somewhat slyly explore very real, human issues under the guise of “fiction”. There’s alcoholism, abuse and more all filtered through this smart, surreal lens of mysticism and adventure.

It’s light and poetic. It’s intriguing and dark. It’s something really different from anything else Pires is doing right now and, it pays off here as he appears to be an endless well of good, original ideas that he’s totally capable of fleshing out, too.

Rubin’s art, too is an intentionally varied and experimental thing that works especially well in tandem with Pires’ script and Garland’s colors. There’s a certain childhood innocence evoked that slowly melts away throughout the issue. Then, at the end, a totally surreal, psychedelic and rich cliffhanger of sorts that is completely different from the tone established earlier on in a smart way.

This is a book with a lot of potential that’s executed quite well by these creators. I’m not convinced that we’re going to get a fully fleshed out story here in only 4 issues but, I have the utmost faith in Pires as a creator and, Rubin is an equally exceptional artist that makes me believe they may just pull it off.
