This is how you pull people into a new world.

Broken World, a new miniseries from the talented Barbiere and Peterson, looks at the last days of a world doomed. Our world, ending.

This first issues tells a very human story about struggle, fear and repentance in a mere 20 or so pages. It’s also incredibly good.

Barbiere and Peterson (whose work I love on Mayday with Curt Pires right now) deliver a cinematic first issue that touches on a lot of complex ideas about faith, death and the future without bogging us down in the details. It’s primarily a set up issue but, it sets up a lot to come that I fully believe this creative team can deliver on.

This is a rich world as brought to life by Barbiere and, it seems like he’s somehow found a way to really put himself in the minds of people whose lives are about to end. All of these issues of faith, psychology and governmental control are deep, complex things but when Barbiere writes them the way he does, it’s just so wonderfully digestible without compromising its deep, symbolic leanings.

I’m currently loving Peterson’s work on Mayday but here, he’s a different artist. Tailoring his style to this end of the world from one woman’s perspective tale. He does a great job of keeping the book grounded and, feeling big even though some of the pages are absolutely crammed full of speech bubbles.

This is a great introductory issue that sets up the second issue to reel us in the rest of the way. There’s some obvious dialogue and maybe too much of it but, in the end, I’ll be coming back for Broken World #2 and, you should, too. How couldn’t you after that ending?
