Latching onto the coattails of the excellent Spider-Verse event from late 2014/early 2015, Secret Wars now has their own Spider-Verse mini-series (which will surely drive collectors insane). Written by Scarlet Spiders' author, Mike Costa, there's not a lot in common between the two series so far. The only thing in common is that characters from Spider-Verse appear in this book and team up. It's a little confusng coming into the story. Many of the characters have memory loss and that isn't explicitly explained as to why because the story is written through first person narration. It's not 100% clear that these are OUR versions of these characters or some other world's versions. Still despite this initial confusion, which I think will be made clear, the story is a total blast and it's great to see the Spiders all team up again.

The art is interesting in an Indie comic sort of way. It doesn't seem like the typical choice for a Spider-book which makes it all the more appealing. Araujo is able to capture fluid motion very well which is perfect for the Spiders. There were quite a few panels I wanted to cut out and frame. However, despite the appeal to my sensibilities, his art won't be for everyone. It's not your typical Big 2 kind of art. Faces and posture in dialogue scenes can seem stilted. This is easily forgiven though because Araujo is a master of paneling and placement.

Without the urgency of the original Spider-Verse, this mini-series stutters a little. Despite that, there's a lot to enjoy about this book from the writing to the art (including a hilarious back-up featuring Spider-Ham).
