Black Science #8

by F.D. White on August 26, 2014

Written by: Rick Remender
Art by: Matteo Scalera, Dean White, & Rus Wooten

Rick Remender is perfecting something in Black Science and it's this: In almost every issue there is an inspired and emotional monologue that is delivered over several pages of exciting, heart-pounding action. It's something I look forward to in every issue now, especially now that Grant McKay isn't the sole narrating voice. Allowing Kadir and Grant's son, Nate, to step forward as narrators allows for so much growth for this horribly dysfunctional family I'm learning to love. I'm hoping as this arc goes forward we'll see narrations from all of the crew to really flesh everything out.

All of this character development occurs amidst an almost non-stop amount of action. Constantly, I'm thrilled by Matteo Scalera and Dean White's beautiful art. These fantastic landscapes and worlds they are developing are breathtaking to behold. The creatures are equally fantastic. Every world we're forced to visit is just as charming and engulfing as it is horribly dangerous. If Scalera and White were not getting enough attention as artists before, hopefully this is the book that skyrockets them to the top of everyone's mind.

If I had one minor gripe with this issue it would be that while Nate's narration is compelling at times I was thrown out of it because it doesn't exactly sound like a kid is speaking. Of course, he's been forced to mature more than regular kids, and he's obviously very bright, but still his word choice and diction at times just seems slightly too mature for his age. But like I said, this is a very MINOR gripe. It really pales in comparison to all the greatness this book presents.

Black Science #8. as usual, continues to blast forward providing thrills, chills, and just the right amount of tender moments to make this a must-buy.
