The Wake #10

This is it everyone, The Wake has reached its final issue. I’m sad to see it go. In ten issues, Scott Snyder and Sean Murphy have created and developed a fascinating world of horror, adventure, and mer-people. It’s a series that by all rights shouldn’t really exist, because if you tried to explain it to someone they would probably just give you a goofy stare and say, “what?” But it exists, and I’m glad it does. The Wake has always been approached with a sense of reckless abandon. The constant theme of “pushing boundaries” in the literal and metaphorical sense is intriguing, because it’s never as serious as it seems. The whole point of the book is to bravely push forward and just enjoy yourself. That’s something currently that comics have somewhat forgotten.

Sean Murphy brings his A-game here, and Matt Hollingsworth brings his pencils to vibrant life with lush colors. And surprisingly they’re able to contain the bursting-at-the-seams plot due to some brilliant page layouts. Seeing this work has me incredibly excited for their upcoming project, “Tokyo Ghost.”

I’ll end this review with a quote from co-lead Leeward that perfectly describes how we should read “The Wake”, or any comic for that matter: “Don’t cry! Be brave! It’s all an adventure!”
