Tomb Raider #3

Writer: Mariko Tamaki
Artist: Phillip Sevy
Color Artist: Michael Atiyeh

Mariko Tamaki and Phillip Sevy are doing great in this series so far. Tomb Raider has not disappointed yet and they are doing a great job in providing a mix of fun and serious tones with the characters and story. This is canon to the rebooted game by the way, so more Lara Croft from that universe!

Lara's badassery seem to be increasing in each issue of this series and I am loving it. The book adds more character development to the characters while maintaining a sense of obscurity to some. Moreover, Tamaki has been focusing on Lara's skillset ever since the first issue, and a familiar weapon is shown off in issue #3. You can notice said weapon in the cover which looks as awesome inside the pages. Mysteries still surround the antagonists that may be saved for a reveal as the story arc goes on. Different plot points and agendas are also explained here in a natural and unforced manner. However, the cliffhanger did not leave me shocked or interested which is the low point of the issue. It felt just like an ordinary scene in the middle of the book.

In addition, the art in this issue is somewhat simplistic. It has its highs and lows in various sections. Some of the characters' anatomy are jarring when noticed. The facial expressions are hit and miss. Some show emotions to varying degrees while others are awkward to look at. However, the colors and panel placing in this book shine in giving life to the pages. The panels easily leads the eyes without confusing the reader. Environments and visual effects are beautiful to look at. These are also present in action scenes where I can tell Sevy and Atiyeh put some hardwork into. Small movements are not entirely disregarded but are instead shown in glimpses which allows the reader to follow the characters' motion.

To wrap it up, the issue is a fun read with tolerable flaws in the art. This is easily a jumping on point for interested readers. I recommend picking this up if you're a fan of Tomb Raider or looking to check the character out.
