Flash #39

Writer: Joshua Williamson
Artist: Carmine Di Giandomenico
Colorist: Ivan Plascencia
Publisher: DC Comics

In the last issue we saw Williamson finally reconcile Barry and Iris after the Running Scared arc, where she left Barry since he lied to her about being the Flash. Williamson, ironically tries to take the relationship slow and I think that is really the highlight of this issue. I personally found the rest of the issue to be a bit of a mess.

Williamson uses the relationship between Barry and Iris to explore the idea of whether or not you should keep secrets from your partner and also do you have a right to tell secrets that are not yours. This is really well done as it shows that there is a friction between their relationship now, and that it feels like it will always be there.

As for the rest of the issue I felt it was a bit of a mess because of the fact that it feels like it throws out a lot of concepts and ideas, that don’t feel related at all. We see multiplex, we see Meena and Raijin and it ends with Grodd. If the issue suggests that they were working together it would be more understandable.

In conclusion I do think that this is a fine issue, but not a strong issue. The last issue was so strong and this issue sets up a lot of cool and interesting ideas, but I feel Williamson needs to iron out these ideas so it doesn’t feel jumbled.
