Marvel Now announces All Female X-Men Team

Huge mutant announcement today brought to us from the head offices of Marvel. A new title simply called X-Men will be debuting April 2013. What is so different about this title is that the line-up will consist of an all female team. The team will be Storm, Rogue, Kitty Pride, Rachel Summers, Psylocke, and the apparent star of the book will be Jubilee!

The series will be written by Brian Wood and illustrated by one of my favorite artist, Olivier Coipel. Now don't get me wrong I love this creative team and I am excited for this series but this is the second upcoming all-female team announced by Marvel and they have not put a single female creator on either comic. Seems odd to me. There are tons of talented women in the industry you'd think Marvel could at least put one on either title.

My other concern with this title is we now have approximitely a dozen mutant books a month. For me this is way too many. Time to cut one or two of the titles in my humble opinion.  I will be getting the first arc of this series for sure but I'm afraid I'll have to let one of my other mutant titles go. I can't have that many similar titles each month. I need variety. I think others will feel the same as well and sales will drop in some X-titles. I guess only time will tell.

The series looks great for sure, but Marvel always does this. Too many series at once. Instead of having a shitload of monthly titles and having half of them be worth a damn, they should concentrate of a handful and make them the obsolute best. That goes double for DC too, one Batman title is enough. Period.

It's a great team up, so there's no serious complaints here. It'll be interesting to see how a male team takes on writing for an all female cast. Personally I think it's the challenge that might arise for the creative team is that which holds the potential for how great this series could end up being. If they can pull it off, I have little doubts that it won't do well, in fact I'd hope it'd be amazing. Though for later arcs I definitely wouldn't mind seeing some more female talent on the creation end.

I mostly think they're just trying to show that their guys can write empowered women just as well.

To the other note, for me this means dropping other titles, but my bias is obvious. Unless, any of the X-titles are really turning into duds (Astonishing X-Men, being close to that point) I can't drop them and will have to decide on other titles to drop.

Loving Psylocke's new look! I'm looking forward to this. And editor Jeanine Schaefer is lending Brian Wood a helping hand with the all female cast and Wood claims she's a bigger x-fan than he is. So, thumbs up! They are all very capable and powerful women - if it's done right the series can be as strong and fantastic as the team itself. Let's hope so!
