Fourteen people have been killed and as many as 50 injured in a shooting early this morning at a movie theater in Aurora, Colorado, according to the local police chief.

Reports are that a gunman opened fire during the midnight screening of the movie "The Dark Knight Rises." Witnesses say the man was picking victims at random as he walked up the steps of the movie theatre away from the screen after letting off a smoke bomb, starting the attack.

All of the victims suffered gunshot wounds, which ranged from minor to critical, according to a spokeswoman at the University of Colorado Hospital.

Some of the victims are also being decontaminated after a smoke bomb or tear gas canister was released in the attack.

Police were responding to a "shooting incident" at the theater, a dispatcher told CNN. The dispatcher did not provide any additional details.

Police spokesperson Frank Fania says the headquarters is about two blocks from the theatre and police were half an hour from a shift change so there were extra officers on hand.

He says officers arrived along with paramedics and emergency crews and with limited ambulance space some of the officers were carrying victims into their patrol cars to drive them to hospital themselves.

"We saw people running around and screaming," a man, who was not identified, told KUSA.

He said there was confusion in the theatre when the shooting began because many believed the sound of gunfire was coming from the movie next door.
